****Spoilers for the plot of Spider-Man: Brand New Day below****
You’ll have to forgive me. After James Gunn’s Superman (basically) said “Free Palestine,” last year, I thought it might be catching in the superhero world, and that Spider-Man: Brand New Day might usher in some political bravery to the MCU too. Alas, it was the same-old-day in the neighborhood, where superheroes are the intergalactic police and work in tandem with fascists to normalize fascism.
On the surface, it’s a heart-warming story about a lovable kid with a good heart, overcoming the isolation of grief and depression and reconnecting with love, life and friendship. And also, right there on the surface, we have our hero partnering with the most infamously racist police force in the country while relying on A.I., facial recognition software and mass surveillance to save the day. Spider-Man: A Technofascist’s Wet Dream.
